FUTURELAND
BARCELONA PARK
This work is one of four posters of the series “Space Invaders”, organised by the artist collective 22a. During two weeks each poster has been distributed in the whole town. The cycle started the 29th of october 2003, a few days before the elections for the catalan parliament (la isla del estado / the island of the state). Barcelona Park is a map of Barcelona in a near future and is therefore recognisable. On the one hand because of the geographic profile of the maritime littoral, delimited by the rivers Besós and Llobregat. And on the other hand because of the administrative organisation of the districts. Considering these elements, the poster plays with common cartographical and meterological symbols, even though their meanings and applications are modified. The wind rose for example, usually a spacial orientation, turns here into a symbol for temporal orientation (P= Past/F=Future) with the motto "El carrusel del progreso / The carrusel of progress”. Further, the districts are delimited through lines similar to physical frontiers, considering bridges as the only connection between the districts. The poster is a critical description of social distribution in the city, regarding social classes and economical activities.
